Act locally, make a global change!

“CAS helped students to become better at taking on new challenges, learning to persevere, and developing better interpersonal skills.”

– The impact of creativity, action, and service (CAS) on students and communities” University of Bath, 2017

What is CAS?

CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) is an integral part of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, designed to encourage students to engage in a variety of activities that promote personal growth and community involvement.

What are some sample CAS experiences?

Creativity

  1. Film or Media Production: Producing a short film, documentary, or podcast on a topic of interest, which might involve scripting, directing, filming, and editing.
  2. Designing and Developing Websites or Apps: Using digital tools to create an online portfolio, website, or even developing a small app for a cause or community project.

Activity

  1. Sports Teams: Joining a school or community sports team, such as soccer, basketball, or swimming, to improve fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship.
  2. Fitness Programs: Training for a 5K run, marathon, or participating in fitness challenges such as yoga or Zumba.

Service

  1. Tutoring or Mentoring: Offering tutoring services to younger students in subjects like math, science, or languages, or mentoring children to help them with their academic or personal development.
  2. Environmental Projects: Participating in a local environmental initiative, such as organizing a community clean-up, planting trees, or working with a group to promote sustainability.

How to combine Creativity, Activity, and Service?

  1. Organizing a Charity Event: Organizing a charity event, like a concert, sports match, or talent show, which involves creative planning, physical activity (such as the event itself), and service (raising money or awareness for a cause).
  2. Sustainability Projects: Developing a community garden or sustainable project, where creativity is used in designing the space or initiative, activity in maintaining it, and service in providing food or awareness to the local community.

These examples not only help students meet the CAS requirements but also encourage personal growth, empathy, and teamwork, all of which contribute to a well-rounded and impactful learning experience.
